This
powerful wine is grown on red slate soil (German: "Rotliegendes") from the volcanic
era. The grapes are pressed from vines
that are more than 70 years old. These vines thus produce low yields, but at the
same produce a dry Riesling wine that is rich and well balanced. The first
aroma is of a juicy, yellow fruit in a playful symbiosis with the
red-slate-minerality of the vineyard.
After a while, the fruity aromas change to impressions of ripe apricots
and peaches, and the slate minerality turns toward a spicy nut flavor. At the table, this wine is a fantastic
companion to meats accompanied by a light, creamy sauce, but to other menus as
well.
