|The Bernkasteler Lay is one of excellent vineyards of the Dr.
Pauly-Bergweiler winery, but it is not as famous as some of the other
vineyards of the Estate. The Bernkasterler Lay produces wines of very
good quality, and is a part of the Bernkasteler Badstube, under which
name the wine is often sold.
The southwest-facing steep slopes on the right bank of the Moselle from the outskirts of Bernkastel toward the town of Zeltingen create exceptionally good growing conditions for Riesling wines characterized by a fine elegance. The soil is loamy and stony, with its base constituent formed by slate residual soil.
The term "Lay" came into the language of the Trevirer from the Gallic word "leie" and means "slate-rock".
